Cape Coral–Fort Myers Ranks #1 for Retirement Quality of Life — and Cape Coral Scores Among Florida’s Safest Cities

TL;DRCape Coral is getting national attention, and this time real numbers back up the headlines. StorageCafe ranked the Cape Coral–Fort Myers metro #1 in the United States for retirement quality of life in 2026. WalletHub’s 2026 Safest Cities study ranked Cape Coral #33 of 182 U.S. cities and #2 in Florida, and WalletHub also ranked Cape Coral #13 nationally in its 2026 Best Places to Retire study. Add a typical home value roughly 39% below Naples, and it’s easy to see why so many people are taking a serious look at Cape Coral.

Why is Cape Coral getting so much attention for retirement?

People have been searching “Cape Coral retirement” for decades. Sunshine, boating and no snow shoveling in February are not exactly new discoveries.

What makes the 2026 rankings interesting is that they look well beyond the weather. StorageCafe’s January 2026 study compared the 100 largest U.S. metro areas on demographics, finances, senior housing, safety, lifestyle and healthcare, and put Cape Coral–Fort Myers at #1. The study highlighted:

Cape Coral–Fort Myers in the StorageCafe study👥 About 29% of residents are 65+❤️ Life expectancy of 80.6 years💵 Average retirement income of about $42,000☀️ Average daily temperature of 73.8°F

Then Travel + Leisure featured the ranking on September 28, 2026, putting Cape Coral and Fort Myers in front of a national audience of people dreaming about where to spend their next chapter.

Did you know?

Cape Coral has more than 400 miles of freshwater and saltwater canals, according to the City of Cape Coral. For a homebuyer, that creates a fun question: what do you want the water behind your house to do? Some canals are freshwater, perfect for views, fishing and kayaking. Others lead out to the Gulf. Route time, bridges, docks and lifts all shape what a particular home offers, and that’s exactly why I built the BigCHomes Cape Coral Water Map.

THE TOOL I BUILT FOR THIS

Is Cape Coral safe?

This is where the newest ranking comes in. WalletHub released its Safest Cities in America 2026 study in October, comparing 182 U.S. cities across 41 measures. Cape Coral ranked:

  • #33 safest overall in the United States
  • #2 among the Florida cities in the study, behind only Port St. Lucie (#25)
  • #15 nationally for Home & Community Safety, the category that carries the most weight in WalletHub’s overall score

WalletHub’s score is broader than crime statistics alone, which is why the accurate way to say it is: Cape Coral was the second-highest-ranked Florida city in WalletHub’s 2026 Safest Cities in America study. That’s not quite as catchy on a billboard, but it is precise, and around here I’d rather give you the details than just the headline.

Cape Coral also ranked #13 nationally for retirement

WalletHub ran a separate Best & Worst Places to Retire in 2026 study, comparing 182 cities on affordability, activities, quality of life and healthcare. Cape Coral came in at #13 in the country and earned a standout #14 for affordability.

So that’s several independent 2026 studies pointing in the same direction: Cape Coral is one of the country’s strongest retirement and relocation destinations. It belongs on the short list.

Cape Coral vs. Naples: a very similar lifestyle for a lot less

Many people start their Southwest Florida search in Naples, then discover Cape Coral just up the coast. Using the same Zillow Home Value Index for both cities as of September 30, 2026:

Typical home value (Zillow, Sept. 2026)🏡 Cape Coral: $334,660🏝️ Naples: $545,587💰 Cape Coral: about $211,000 (≈39%) lower

For a lot of buyers, that difference is the whole conversation. It can mean the difference between a condo and a single-family home with a pool, between dreaming about waterfront and actually owning it, or between stretching the budget and keeping money in the bank for the fun parts of retirement. Cape Coral also offers a huge variety of single-family neighborhoods and canal-front homes, with many areas outside of an HOA.

What the national rankings don’t tell you about retiring in Cape Coral

A national study can compare cities. It can’t tell you which Cape Coral home is right for you. That part gets more specific, and more fun.

1. Cape Coral is not one housing market

A Gulf-access home in Southwest Cape Coral shops very differently from a newer home in Northwest Cape, a freshwater canal home or a condo near the Yacht Club. Established neighborhoods, new construction, golf communities and 55+ options all compete for different buyers. That’s why I don’t love broad statements like “the Cape Coral market is up” or “it’s a buyer’s market.” The competitive set matters.

2. “Waterfront” means a lot of different things here

A listing that says “waterfront” tells me very little by itself. Here’s what I want to know:

  • Freshwater or Gulf access?
  • If Gulf access, what’s the actual route, and are there bridges along the way?
  • How long is the trip to open water?
  • Is there a dock and a lift, and will your boat fit?

For someone retiring here specifically to have a boat behind the house, these answers can matter more than an extra bedroom.

3. Shop insurance like a pro

Smart Florida buyers look at the insurance picture alongside the price. The good news: features like a newer roof, impact windows or shutters, and a current wind mitigation report can make a real difference in what you pay. I help buyers line those details up early, so you go into the offer with confidence.

4. Know the address-level details

Cape Coral’s Utility Expansion Project (UEP) is a local topic many out-of-area buyers have never heard of. Depending on the street, you’ll want to know water and sewer status and whether any assessment balance applies. Two homes at nearly the same price can come with different ownership costs, which is why I treat the address itself as part of the research.

5. Retirement here is about more than the house

A big reason Cape Coral shines in retirement studies is that so much of daily life happens outside the front door. The City of Cape Coral runs more than 39 parks and recreation locations covering about 1,595 acres, from boat ramps and pickleball courts to golf, community programs and nature areas. Four Mile Cove Ecological Preserve alone covers 365 acres, with a boardwalk and a nature trail.

Pickleball, boating, golf and parks: a lot of Cape Coral living happens outdoors.

Healthcare is growing too. Cape Coral already has Lee Health’s Cape Coral Hospital, the new South Cape waterfront project added Lee Health medical space, and HCA Florida Healthcare has announced a planned new HCA Florida Cape Coral Hospital at 322 SW Pine Island Road, with up to 100 acute-care beds and an opening targeted for 2029.

And with Fort Myers right across the Caloosahatchee, you’re close to shopping, dining, entertainment and Southwest Florida International Airport, while Cape Coral keeps its relaxed, residential feel.

What this means for Cape Coral buyers

If the national attention has put Cape Coral on your radar, welcome. Use the rankings as your reason to take a closer look, then let’s find the part of Cape Coral that fits how you want to live. Before you buy, I’d want us to understand the neighborhood, current comparable listings, the insurance picture, the roof and major systems, utility and assessment status, any HOA or condo rules and, for waterfront, the route and boat setup.

A home can be wonderful and still be wrong for a particular buyer. The goal isn’t just to buy in Cape Coral. It’s to buy the right Cape Coral home for the life you’re planning.

What this means for Cape Coral homeowners

National recognition is good news for Cape Coral. More people searching “best places to retire in Florida,” “is Cape Coral safe” and “moving to Cape Coral” means more people discovering the city, and more potential buyers looking at homes like yours.

Buyers still compare every home against today’s competition, so condition, updates, location, waterfront features and pricing all matter. If you’re wondering what selling would actually look like, I built a tool for exactly that.

So, is Cape Coral one of the best places to retire in Florida?

No single city is perfect for every retiree. But in 2026, Cape Coral has some pretty strong evidence behind its reputation:

  • StorageCafe ranked Cape Coral–Fort Myers #1 nationally for retirement quality of life.
  • WalletHub ranked Cape Coral #13 nationally for retirement, and #14 for affordability.
  • WalletHub ranked Cape Coral #33 nationally for safety, the #2 Florida city in the study, and #15 for Home & Community Safety.
  • Cape Coral’s typical home value runs about 39% below Naples.

Pair that with year-round sunshine, 400+ miles of canals, a huge parks system and a wide range of housing styles, and it’s no surprise Cape Coral keeps showing up on retirement lists. The rankings are where the conversation starts. The fun part is finding the corner of Cape Coral that fits you.

Frequently asked questions about retiring in Cape Coral

Is Cape Coral a good place to retire?

Several 2026 national studies rate Cape Coral highly for retirement. StorageCafe ranked the Cape Coral–Fort Myers metro #1 in the U.S. for retirement quality of life, and WalletHub ranked Cape Coral #13 among 182 U.S. cities in its 2026 Best Places to Retire study, including #14 for affordability.

Is Cape Coral one of the safest cities in Florida?

Yes. In WalletHub’s 2026 Safest Cities in America study, Cape Coral ranked #33 of 182 U.S. cities and second among the Florida cities included, behind Port St. Lucie (#25). Cape Coral ranked #15 nationally in the Home & Community Safety category.

Is Cape Coral cheaper than Naples?

Yes. Using the same Zillow Home Value Index for both cities, the typical Cape Coral home value was $334,660 as of September 30, 2026, compared with $545,587 in Naples, roughly $211,000 (about 39%) lower. Cape Coral also offers a large supply of single-family and canal-front homes.

Does Cape Coral really have 400 miles of canals?

Yes. The City of Cape Coral reports more than 400 miles of freshwater and saltwater canals. Some are freshwater, and others connect to the Gulf of Mexico, with different routes, bridges and travel times.

Are all Cape Coral waterfront homes Gulf access?

No. Cape Coral has both freshwater and Gulf-access canals. Even among Gulf-access homes, the route, bridges, docks and boat lifts can make each property a little different, which is why it’s worth checking the specific address.

What should I check before buying a retirement home in Cape Coral?

Look at the neighborhood and comparable listings, the home’s insurance features (roof age, opening protection, wind mitigation), the roof and major systems, utility and assessment (UEP) status, any HOA or condo rules and, for waterfront homes, the boating route, bridges, dock and lift. A free Cape Coral Property Check is a quick place to start.
