There's a whole other Florida hiding behind the beach towels.
We spend a lot of time talking about Gulf access in Cape Coral. Fair enough—we have a few canals around here. But a friend recently got me thinking: what about the people who want to spend their Saturdays in the woods, on a freshwater lake, or watching wildlife instead of idling through a no-wake zone?
Turns out the answer is: there's more here than you might expect. I went straight to the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) to separate the real opportunities from the campfire stories. Here's the useful version.
The big number comes directly from FWC's WMA overview ↗. WMAs protect habitat and support outdoor recreation; not every acre is open to every activity.
If you're thinking about moving to Florida and assume you have to trade hunting season for beach season, don't make that assumption. The better question is which part of Southwest Florida fits the weekends you actually want?

Start with Babcock/Webb
A good first stop for learning about regulated public hunting near Punta Gorda. Review the current brochure and hunt calendar before planning a visit.
Explore FWC’s Babcock/Webb guide ↗🦌 Yes, you can hunt in Southwest Florida.
Deer, turkey, quail, wild hog and small-game opportunities exist in the region, but availability depends on the specific property, permit, season and hunt type. Here's where I'd start researching:

1. Babcock/Webb: the local outdoor two-for-one
FWC says deer and northern bobwhite populations have benefited from habitat management here. Hunters need to pay attention to different rules for the main area and Yucca Pens, and certain seasons require quota permits. You can also explore wildlife viewing, hiking and freshwater fishing.

2. Babcock Ranch Preserve: yes, the ranch has hunting
FWC administers limited, regulated hunts on 16,612 acres of this working preserve. It's not the same thing as permission to hunt in the Babcock Ranch residential community. And here's a detail worth remembering: FWC explicitly prohibits fishing, frogging and trapping in this preserve's hunting area.
3. Picayune Strand: an entirely different kind of wilderness
East of Naples, Picayune Strand combines cypress, wetlands and pine habitat with a complicated restoration history. FWC confirms hunting is available under its area-specific regulations. Access and conditions can change with restoration and seasonal weather.
A hunting spot on a map isn't automatically open today. Quota permits, hunt methods, species, posted hours, and gates differ by area. Start with FWC's current WMA brochures before you load up the truck.
🎣 Let's give freshwater fishing some love.
Saltwater fishing gets the billboards. But the inland side deserves a spot in the conversation too—especially if you're a bass, bluegill or crappie person.

Webb Lake: a freshwater option right in our region
FWC lists Florida bass, bluegill, redear sunfish, speckled perch and channel catfish. Bank and pier fishing are possible, and three boat ramps provide access for non-gasoline-powered boats. Fish-management-area size and bag restrictions apply.
Lake Okeechobee: the bigger inland adventure
For a longer day trip, Lake Okeechobee is one of Florida's signature freshwater destinations, particularly for bass and black crappie. It is also a massive, shallow lake where water levels and boating conditions matter, so check the current FWC forecast and navigation information.
What I love about this topic is the variety. Want Gulf-access boating? We've got it. Prefer bass fishing and quiet pine flatwoods? We can talk about that too. A home search should start with how you want to live here—not just the number of bedrooms.

❓ Questions people actually ask
Can I hunt deer near Fort Myers or Cape Coral?
Yes, regulated public-land deer hunting opportunities exist at certain Southwest Florida WMAs, including Babcock/Webb. Whether you can hunt on a particular day depends on the current area brochure, season, permit requirements, and access conditions.
Do I need a separate WMA permit?
Often, yes. Depending on your exemptions and activity, a Florida hunting license, management-area permit, quota permit and other permits may be required. Verify your situation through FWC's official license guide.
Can I go to a WMA just to hike or watch wildlife?
Many WMAs have wildlife-viewing and other recreational opportunities, but access can be restricted during hunts or management activities. Check each area's current rules; wear bright colors where appropriate during hunting periods.
Where can I freshwater fish near Punta Gorda?
Webb Lake at Babcock/Webb WMA is one official option. FWC lists bank and pier access, several fish species, and boat ramps. Gasoline-powered motors are prohibited and special fishing rules apply.
Can I hunt or fish inside Babcock Ranch Preserve?
FWC administers regulated hunts in designated preserve areas, but specifically says fishing is prohibited in the preserve's hunting area. This is separate from Babcock/Webb WMA and from the Babcock Ranch residential community.
Is Lake Okeechobee close enough for a fishing day trip?
It can be a day trip from parts of Southwest Florida, depending on your starting point and access ramp. Plan around driving distance, water levels, weather and launch conditions rather than assuming every shoreline access is the same.
